Description of the word: An Old World vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), native to S Europe, Africa, India, and Tibet; also known as the bearded vulture; grey back; reddish head and underparts; white chest, on which it rubs reddish iron oxide dust; dark ‘beard’ of stiff feathers; inhabits mountains; eats carrion, especially bones, which it breaks by dropping them from the air onto rocks.
