Theologian, born in Bayonne, SW France. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and Louvain (1604), where he met Jansénius. He befriended Bérulle, Arnauld d'Audilly, and Vincent de Paul while at Poitiers (1617–20). In 1636 he became spiritual director of the monastery at Port-Royal, the centre of Jansenism. He was imprisoned for his views by Richelieu in Vincennes (1638–43) but returned to Port-Royal after Richelieu's death.  |
