A massive castle at Les Andelys, Normandy, NW France, sited on a promontory overlooking the R Seine, and controlling the approach to Rouen. Built 1196–8 by Richard I, King of England (1157–99) and Duke of Normandy, it was inspired by the Crusader castles of Syria and Palestine. Physically impregnable, it was captured by the French king, Philip Augustus, only after a long siege in 1203–4. |
